Welcome to our summer family giving series

President John F. Kennedy once said, “Children are the living messages that we send to a time we will never see.” Do you think your children will carry forward a message of generosity in the generations to come? The good news is, it’s never too late, or too early, to instill the value of giving in children or grandchildren.

You can help establish a legacy of generosity in your family when you make giving a priority and a habit. Why not schedule some time this summer to do that? To help you, we’ve put together a summer family giving series with practical tips, relevant scriptures, and creative ideas for children of all ages.

This week's focus: Prayer
Have you ever considered how prayer is interwoven with generosity? Prayer itself is an act of giving that can change the condition of our hearts toward others, which can lead to a more generous spirit. Spending time with God reflecting on the ways He might use us to do His will is where giving starts. The more we keep God involved in every aspect of our daily family life, the more generous we become.

Here are three ways to embrace giving through prayer with your family this week:

  1. Make it a habit to bless others: Pray for opportunities to bless others such as neighbors, friends at school, strangers you meet, and people you don’t get along with. Then, be open to God’s “interruptions“ – timely opportunities to bless someone that might require you to put aside your normal plan or schedule for the day. Idea: Start your day by taking turns praying a specific blessing for one another.

  2. See people as God sees them: Pray to see a person’s heart, rather than their external trappings. Encourage your children to look deeper, and consider other viewpoints and perspectives. Idea: Share an example with your kids of a time when God changed your heart regarding a difficult person or situation through prayer.

  3. Be creative: You could create a customized prayer calendar with specific prayer requests each week from your family, friends, and the charities that you support. Or you could use a missions-type calendar that lists a specific people group each week with the needs of the group. (You can check out this example calendar ceated by Open Doors USA.) Idea: Position a calendar with prayer needs near the dinner table, and pray before each meal for those on the calendar for that day or week.
